Crash kills one teen, injures two

Speed, rain possible factors, Gatineau police say

A 17-year-old boy was killed and two other teenage boys were seriously injured in a collision in Gatineau on Wednesday morning, the second fatal collision involving Ottawa-area teenagers in less than a week. The three boys, all popular members of a high school football team, were driving on Maloney Boulevard East, near Labrosse Boulevard, at about 11 a.m. They were on their way to a chip stand for lunch when the Mazda Protege they were in went out of control and hit a signpost.

Gatineau police said rain and speed were considered possible factors.

Firefighters used extraction equipment to remove the teenagers from the car. The driver, 16-year-old Alexandre Soares, and 15-year-old passenger Thierry Guindon were transported to
Hull hospital with injuries that were serious, but not considered to be life-threatening.

The other passenger was pronounced dead in hospital, police said. They did not release his identity, but friends said he was Michel Simard, a student and football player at Polyvalente Nicolas-Gatineau.

George Soares, the father of the driver, said at the hospital that, as soon as he received the call from police saying his son had been in an accident, he knew Michel and Thierry would also be involved.

“They were always together,” he said. “They were like three brothers.”
Soares said he was holding his son’s hand in the hospital room when the Gatineau police broke the news that one of Alexandre’s friends didn’t make it.

“That was tough,” he said. “That was really, really tough.”

For his son, the healing of his banged-up body will be the easy part, he said. “That’s nothing, the physical recovery.”

Soares added that he did not believe speed would prove to be a factor in the crash.
Jonathan Patry, 18, who played football with Michel Simard last year, said the wide receiver was known for his spectacular catches.

“He was a good guy, a good friend,” Patry said.
Samantha Prud’homme, 15, said Simard was something to watch on the field. “He was very graceful,” she said.

News of Wednesday’s collision spread quickly among classmates. Several saw the crash site during the lunch hour, said Claude Beaulieu, the principal at Polyvalente Nicolas-Gatineau.
Beaulieu called the lunch-hour collision “devastating” and said staff were putting in place plans to comfort students following the death.

“It’s a very sad day for the school,” Beaulieu said. “I know that (today) is going to be hard for them.”

Some students didn’t want to go to class in the afternoon after learning of the collision, he said. The football team was supposed to practise in the afternoon, but instead met with psychologists and staff, Beaulieu said.

Students throughout the school were talking about the collision.
“Everyone wonders why and how,” Ajo Elias, 15, said as he left the school.

Some friends headed to the Hull hospital, while others visited the crash site, including Mario Lepage-Doucet and Marc-André Dubois, both 18, who paused for a moment of silence beside the road.

They said the boys in the car were popular at school and key members of the football team.
“It’s a big shock for everybody,” Lepage-Doucet said.

Several people in a nearby strip mall had rushed outside after hearing a loud bang, said Annie Fournier, who works at a salon in the strip mall.

Fournier said people often speed through the area, adding the busy stretch of road could be dangerous during rainstorms because of water that pools in the lanes.

Fournier’s co-worker, Teresa Bettencourt, said she went outside to see the car “hugging” the pole.

One lane of Maloney Boulevard East was closed into Wednesday afternoon as police investigated.
More than two hours after the collision, the rain had stopped, but water was still pooled on the road. Debris littered a grassy embankment beside the road.

On Sunday, after three teenagers died in a crash near Navan. Funerals for Chris Sabean, 19, Brad Rivington, 19, and Ginny Marko, 16, are scheduled for Friday.

A fourth individual in the car, University of Ottawa student Elise Grundy, survived the collision, which happened at about 1:40 a.m., after the group left a housewarming party.
