Most universities do have time limitation: After certain number of years( I believe it's 7 0r 9), you are out, period.

Alan Greenspan is an exception. If he was not the Chairman of Federal Reserve, he won't get the chance to complete his phd. ( Life is not fair, haha)

I saw these two on CV at work:
1. Phd Candidate -- If you passed the qualifying exam
2. Studies towards a PhD degree in XXX.

问了一下老外，答案是没人说 “PHD dropout”，但常用 “high school dropout” 这个说法。如果你说 PHD dropout，别人也能懂，只是通常不这样讲。

你可以说 “incomplete PHD degree”。

这个老外是绝对老外了。老外口头上称楼主这种情况为incomplete Ph.D degree，但是不能这样写入简历。degree没有incomplete一说。规定的课程完成，学分凑够，被授予学位，拿到了才是你的学位；反之，你就拿不到，没拿到前你就没有degree。

口头这么说可以，如果不想要那个工作。没有完成的学业，面谈时候如果说得不让人信服的话，是成事不足败事有余。（如果你是雇人的经理，你对别人说这样的学历，第一感觉是什么？）

在简历上这么写？

试一下，能同你其他的学历、工作经历平行起来么？
