Dear Mr. Maheu:
We are writing about some remarks made by Mr. John Counsell on CFRA 580 on March 19, 2003. For some unclear reasons, he included China within the "Axis of Evil" when discussing the ongoing war in Iraq.
This case of irresponsible journalism has apparently raised anger in the Ottawa Chinese community. Our members, as well as other Ottawa residents from all walks of life, are disappointed. We feel that the plain truth was badly violated. Mr. Counsell has ignored the fact that, as one of the five permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations, China has been playing an increasingly important role in world peace and peacekeeping. One must not forget that, since the 9/11 tragedy, China has actively participated in the joint effort to rid of international terrorism. In the effort to root out weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, a Chinese national, as a member of the UN weapons inspection team, lost his life while on active duty. As a result, China has become the only country that suffered such a loss in this UN mission.
The host’s remarks may have little negative impact on the excellent bilateral relationship between Canada and China. The potential harm was nonetheless disturbing. China is the third largest trading partner of Canada; a healthy and constructive Sino-Canadian relationship has become vital to both the Canadian and the Chinese economy. It is with profound reasons that Prime Minister Jean Chretien has called China one of the best friends of Canada in one of his recent remarks.
We, the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Association of Chinese-Canadian University Alumni (OACCUA), an independent, non-partisan, and not-for-profit organization representing thousands of university graduates from China in the National Capital Region, feel obliged to voice our objections to the erroneous remarks made by Mr. Counsell. We feel that it is our duty to join other community members to push for a more responsible media.
We noted that Mr. Counsell has made repeated apologies on air the next day after his controversial remarks. The station management has also taken some active steps to rectify the negative influence created by the host's remarks. We sincerely hope that similar incidents will not occur in the future, so that a good "on air" reputation can be cultivated.
Yours truly,
Dr. Xing-Zhong Huang, president
