I have two children in the gifted program. Both of them don't have that much homework (up to grade 6). Instead, they have a lot of field trip and projects. They do a lot of work during the class, which is the way should be. I also like how the math is taught at their school. The teacher gives them an envulation first when a new unit is started, base on each student's capability, each student has different start point.
