Passport was not and have never been a requirement for US entry. The standard requirement for Canadians has been a piece of id. A driver's license used to be ok before 911. Citizenship card is more than enough anytime. Unless you look really really non-Canadian.

以前有一公司要求所有"SWAp team"(类似现场engineer)的人备一本passport，公司出钱办。
如果不想自找麻烦的话，还是带passport为好。
长着一张中国人脸仅用一张driver license进入美国的可能性不大吧。

Driver license can never be used to enter US. Canadian Citizenship & Birth Certificate used to work for visitor.

However, you have to use passport for now (unless you live in the bordering cities just traveling by car). An appropriate Visa is needed for any purpose other than visiting, for example, B1 for business, TN or H1B for working permit.
