Canada's Army in Action
In early January, 1951, the Chinese forces launched another offensive, again capturing the city of Seoul. The UN forces established a new defensive line, approximately sixty miles south of Seoul, and the PPCLI troops were given assignments such as conducting anti-guerilla patrols. In February, the Canadians were placed under in the 27th British Commonwealth Infantry Brigade. Under the command of U.S. General Matthew Ridgway, the Brigade included two British battalions, the 1st Middlesex and the 1st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. The 3rd Royal Australian Infantry Regiment, 16th Field Regiment of the New Zealand Artillery, and India's 60th Field Ambulance also made up the Commonwealth Brigade.
As the UN forces were preparing for a second advance towards the 38th Parallel, and the 27th Commonwealth Brigade was ordered to capture the high ground near Hoengsong. On February 21st, during a rain storm mixed with snow, the PPCLI's and the British Argylls began an advance north. The next day, during an attack on Hill 444, the first Canadian casualties were recorded, when four soldiers were killed, and another wounded. Throughout February and into March, the PPCLI's and the Commonwealth Brigade continued to advance. They met heavy resistance from an enemy that was well camouflaged and well dug in. Suddenly, on March 15th, Chinese troops began a withdrawl all across the front. Seoul had been liberated again, and the US and Commonwealth armies pursued the retreating enemy, north of the 38th Parallel towards the Kapyong River. On April 8th, the Patricias crossed the 38th Parallel.
