In such a big country with 1.35billion people, with diverse culture and education background, something creepy or weird taking place every day, but that’s something weird and creepy to us too, otherwise it loses the news value to be eye catching… Don’t interpret China merely through the media, journalists write stuff base on their own perceptions, not fairly objective.
Feeding 1.35billion people and providing water, electricity and gas needs is a big daily task, that’s why we need natural resources, meanwhile Chinese’s per capita CO2 emission is only 1/3 of North American does. We won’t and are not able to live like North American does, as which means we will need 6 earths to supply these energies…China is also working hard on renewable energy and trying to use resources more efficiently. Currently China is the #1 country producing the electricity through solar power and is expected to generalize 20% of the total energy through renewable energy by 2020. Believe me, managing China is a terribly complex governance. It’s a gift for Canadian living on such a big land with such fruitful natural resources, moreover, the population of Shanghai is equal to that of whole Canada, to run a city like Shanghai regularly is a big challenge already and I am proud that the city is operated systematically every day. Even surprisingly that Shanghai is safer than Toronto.
Chinese government would continue to work on developing rural and less developed areas to balance with the more developed areas. That’ll be part of where China’s continuous growths come from. Natural resource is the endowment for Canada, Canada used to sell the same thing to US and other countries. So please take it easy for CNOOC acquiring Nexen. Both Nexen and CNOOC are international companies, not only limited to assets in Canada, doing business is a common language, no matter where you are from what political system you belong to, but to meet customers’ demands and supply. Before the acquisition, CNOOC already made the assessment that they prepared to work much harder to succeed here, don’t take Chinese companies ideologically, if CNOOC fails to adapt to the local Canadian culture, they will fail the business in Canada, so to speak the local language and respect local culture is the must.
