Eight people have been displaced and are being cared for by the Red Cross after a major fire broke out in a Gatineau apartment building Friday night.
Gatineau Fire Operations Chief Daniel St-Jacques said officials received a call at 10:20 p.m. reporting fire at 47 Wright St. in downtown Hull, a “historic” building that housed nine apartments and a grocery store.
The fire started at the back of the building, he said, and spread up through the roof and the third floor.
Three people were evacuated, while the others had left the building before firefighters arrived.
About 40 firefighters responded, and the fire was deemed under control by just before 7 a.m. Saturday.
Damages are estimated at about $700,000, said St-Jacques.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but inspectors will be attending the scene to investigate Saturday, he said.
