Schools in the West Quebec School Board will be closed on Wednesday, marking the second day for a mass closure of schools in the board.

On Wednesday, the board announced that all of its schools would close, as support staff workers have taken to the picket lines to as part of provincewide protests over stalled contract negotiations in the province.

Teachers at the schools are supporting staff by not crossing picket lines.

School-run daycare services are also affected.

Teachers in the board, who are also in the middle of stalled contract talks, will be taking part in rotating strike action on Monday and Tuesday next week.

On Tuesday, a total of 11 schools in the West Quebec School Board were ordered closed on Tuesday after bomb threats were received by area police departments.

More than 40 schools across Quebec — including 11 administered by the West Quebec School Board, along with a career centre and an adult education centre — were closed Tuesday “for safety reasons” after numerous threats of possible bombs at educational facilities.

The threats appeared to be related to recent labour strife between Quebec teachers and the provincial government. According toMarguerite-D’Youville Liberal MNA Pierre Moreau, the threats were signed by a so-called coalition that authorities have never heard of and which referred to the quality of education and the attitude of teachers at schools across the province.

Quebec is locked in a labour dispute with its teachers that has led to rotating strikes across the province.
