A man was critically injured near Maniwaki, Que. after a Sûreté du Québec police officer shot into a fleeing vehicle early Monday morning.
At just after 1:30 a.m., a police pursuit began in the municipality of Messines, just south of Maniwaki. The chase seemed to be ending when the fleeing vehicle stopped near Chemin de la Filme and Rue Patry.
However, when a Sûreté du Québec officer approached the car and attempted to open the door, the driver of the vehicle accelerated. The provincial police officer shot into the car, critically wounding the driver. A passenger was also in the vehicle, but was not injured.
According to Montreal police spokesperson Manuel Couture — whose force has been asked by the province to investigate the shooting — the driver was taken to hospital, along with the officer, who was treated for shock following the incident.
