Neighbours who broke into a burning apartment on Caldwell Avenue Saturday are being credited with saving the lives of twin girls who were accidentally locked inside as the fire broke out.
The mother of the twins, who are two and a half years old, stepped into the hallway late Saturday afternoon to drop garbage into the disposal, and the door swung shut behind her and locked. She had no key.
She had left a pot on the stove, and soon it began to smoke. By 4:45 p.m. there were flames coming from the apartment, along with thick smoke.
Luckily, neighbours came to help. Fire officials say three men forced the door open and pulled out one of the children first. When firefighters arrived they rescued the second child, along with one of the neighbours who had located her in the apartment.
The twins were listed in serious but stable condition at hospital, paramedics said. The twins’ mother and the man were treated for minor smoke inhalation. The district fire chief was released from hospital and had returned to his home by Sunday morning. His name wasn’t immediately available, but paramedics said he is 40 years old.
One of the neighbours who came to help was Montell Russell.
He later posted on Facebook: “I did what anyone would do in my situation. Two children were trapped inside a burning apartment and I acted on impulse and instinct. Nothing more can be said.”
Firefighters declared a second-alarm fire and the building was evacuated. Witnesses said they saw a woman bring an infant outside. A man rushed into the building and “fainted” when he came out.
Veteran firefighter Marc Messier, formerly the communications officer for the fire service, later wrote on his personal Twitter account:
“At least 3 men who reside at Caldwell breached the door of the fire unit and rescued one of the children.
“Then a District Fire Chief arrived, made several attempts to enter the smoke-filled unit and rescued a man who had found the second child.
“Kudos to the residents who assisted in the rescuing of the 2 children at yesterday’s Caldwell St.”
There were several reports circulating on Facebook from neighbours in the Caldwell building, with some differences. One report said one of the neighbours climbed to the balcony of the children’s apartment and broke in through the glass in order to let the other men in the front door.
Residents of the building were offered shelter on OC Transpo buses while firefighters checked the building, said District Chief Marc Asselin.
Residents were allowed back into the building around 6 p.m. The apartment where the fire started was the only one damaged.
