A 47-year-old man was taken to The Ottawa Hospital with a pulse and in critical condition after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest in the parking lot of the Home Depot on Bank Street.

Paramedics said “all key elements for survival” were available and used to help stabilize the victim after the incident, including early 911 notification, CPR, defibrillation and advanced paramedic care.

Paramedics were called at about 11:25 a.m. by a shopper who began CPR immediately.

Ottawa police officers who were in the area arrived to provide early defibrillation for the patient, while paramedics initiated advanced cardiac life support upon arrival and inserted a tube to assist breathing.

The measures dramatically increase survival rates in cardiac arrests, the paramedics said.
