Rockland schools were locked down Thursday in response to two separate reports of teenage boys armed with firearms in or near a school.
Ontario Provincial Police were called to the Rockland District High School on St. Joseph Street in the morning after being notified of an incident in the school involving threats to cause bodily harm with a weapon. A 17-year-old teen was arrested.
Later in the afternoon, OPP from the Russell County detachment received a report of a male carrying a firearm as he walked along Giroux Street in Rockland. Local schools were notified and implemented school safety protocols as a precaution. Another 17-year-old was subsequently arrested.
Charges are pending in both cases, but police say the two incidents, which are still under investigation, are not related.
The names of the accused have not been released in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Anyone with information about these two incidents is asked to call Const. Marc Leblanc at the OPP Communication Centre at 1-888-310-1122, the Russell County detachment at 613-443-4499 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222. Information can also be entered at www.tipsubmit.com.
