The capital region’s jobless rate jumped to 6.8 per cent in March from 6.5 per cent in February, Statistics Canada reported Friday.

The rise came despite a slight, net increase of 700 jobs. The labour force, which includes those looking for work, grew by 2,900 – which added 2,200 people to the unemployment rolls.

This marks the fourth straight monthly rise in the region’s jobless rate after bottoming out in December at 6.2 per cent. Nevertheless, last month’s tally remains below where it was a year earlier, when the rate was 7.1 per cent.

A big surprise in the March data was a 10 per cent drop from February in the number of construction jobs. That was a net loss of 4,100, which likely reflects weakness in the residential sector.

However, overall employment levels remained steady thanks to increases in the government and professional services sectors. The local economy added 2,000 jobs in public administration – with 80 per cent of the rise accounted for by provincial and local government. The federal government added just 400 bodies.

The number employed in professional services was up 1,900 in March, likely reflecting the resumption of regular contracting levels by the federal government.

High-tech remains a weak spot, with Statcan reporting 38,700 workers in the sector compared to 40,500 in February.
