A police dog tracked down a pair of suspects accused of playing bumper cars in the ByWard Market in a car stolen during a west-end break-in on Monday.

Just before midnight, police were called to a hit-and-run at Murray and Cumberland streets after a vehicle fled at high speed, ran red lights and collided with parked cars and city property.

It then continued onto the westbound Hwy. 417, where it came to a stop just before the Bronson Avenue off-ramp. Police say witnesses saw two men get out and run toward Arlington Avenue.

A foot pursuit with a K9 unit turned up the suspects, one of whom suffered minor injuries in the arrest and was briefly treated in hospital.

Meanwhile, central district investigators alleged the suspects were involved in a burglary where items were taken from a home while the residents slept and made off in their car.

Nicholas Lalonde, 22, is charged with breaking and entering, possession of stolen property obtained by crime, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, failure to stop at the scene of an accident, refusing to provide a breath sample and breach of probation.

Sharmarke Abdi-Djama, 20, is charged with breaking and entering, possession of stolen property obtained by crime, and failure to comply with a recognizance.

Both Ottawa men appeared in court Tuesday.
