The National Capital Region’s jobless rate climbed to 5.3 per cent in April, from 5.1 per cent in March, due to a drop of 2,200 jobs.

Public administration jobs in the capital were up for the 10th straight month, reaching 174,400 in April, compared with 173,700 in March and 147,000 a year ago.

Drilling down, federal government jobs in the region in April reached 153,500, compared with 152,900 in March, up from just 129,900 in April a year ago.

The Statcan April jobs survey shows 45,600 tech jobs in capital region, up 400 from March but a sharp improvement from 39,700 a year ago.

Nationally, Canada’s unemployment rate fell to 6.5 per cent, its lowest level since October 2008.

The economy added 3,200 jobs in the month, about one-third of the 10,000 gain forecast by economists.
