Capital jobless rate drops to 4.8 per cent in March

The jobless rate in the capital region tumbled to 4.8 per cent in March, from 5.1 per cent in February, reflecting the addition of 2,600 net new jobs while the labour force grew by just 400.

It’s the lowest jobless rate in Ottawa-Gatineau since December 2008.

The rate in Ottawa dropped to 4.9 per cent in March from 5.3% in February, reflecting a gain of 900 net new jobs while labour force shrank.

In Gatineau, unemployment rate increased to 4.7 per cent from 4.5 per cent over same period as the labour force grew by 1,200, while 800 net new jobs were created.

Drilling into job sectors for the region, the number of federal government jobs increased 2,300 in March from February, for new total of 125,600, while the tech sector deflated slightly to 49,700, 700 from the month before.

Meanwhile, nationally the labour market showed strength in March, adding 32,300 jobs led by the construction industry.

Despite the growth, the unemployment rate held at a 30-year-low of 5.8 per cent.
