Answer 1: don't ever try to compare these two brands. That will cause a big fight.
Answer 2: same as above.
Answer 3: D70 (I use D70 )
Answer 4: there is no must-have lens. I have D70 kit lens (18-70mm, = 35mm's 28-105mm) for common use, 50mm 1.8 for indoor portrait or low light shooting, and a 70-300mm (35mm's 105mm-450mm) zoom lens for MM shooting.
Answer 5: S400.
:zany: I don't want to compare N and C either. Just tell you why I chose Nikon D70:
When I was shopping my DSLR, 300D was $1300 with kit lens, D70 was $1800 with kit lens, and 10D was $1800 body only. I went to the camera store, tried them all. I had used Nikon film camema before, so I played D70 a little while and started shooting. It just felt good too. The wight, the color (I love black always), the shutter sound etc. I don't like the look of 300D (very personal), and the power-on time of it was a little slow (improved, davidc?). I knew 10D was a very good camera. But with the same price, I could get D70 with a very good kit lens (cover 28-105, nice!). I also did a research of all these 3 cameras. At last I chose D70. I have been happy ever since.

And, most importantly, try them in store. You can bring your memory card with you. Don't be scared with some result, with DSLR, post process is necessity.
