(1) Why do I need a friend or relative to buy a car, as it is still under my name?
(2) Even in my name, as it is registered in States, will it be still considered as pre-registered one?

(1) When you buy a car from a dealer, the address you provide to the dealer has to match that on your driver's license. Do you have a US driver's license of yourself?
(2) As long as a car is registered, it is considered as a pre-registered vehicle no mater under whose name. It has no MCO any more and only has a "Title", sinece the original MCO has to be handed in to the MTO office where the vehicle is first registered. You can import a car under your name to yourself.

OK. I don't have a US driver's licsense. So the title is under my friend/relative's name. Then there seems to be an extra step to transfer the title, which are missing in the five steps you outlined in your previous reponse. Could you clarify?

On the other hand, it may not be that bad to ask local people to shop a car for us. They can bargain for the price and normally can cut between $1000-$2000 from MSRP. This may save the extra tax we have to pay for the price difference between two countries. I bet that US car dealer won't give Canadian such option.

In US, people usually bargain for the price from the invoice price directly, not the MSRP.

I mentioned this (The Title) in my first respose to you. It is the third item I listed. That it, if a vehicle is pre-registered, you need to obtained a certified copy of "The Title" from a MTO office of the state you purchase from. Not just your friend/relative transfers "The Title" to you as here in Canada. If you go through Alexandria Bay from US to Canada, you have to drop the original (no copy or no Fax) "The Title" to the us export control office (at Alexandria Bay) 72 working hours before you can export and drive the car to Canada. But, you can fax "The Title" 72 working hours before you go through Queenston-Lewiston Bridge at Buffalo.

Based on my experience, I got the same discounts as US people: (us)$1250 cash rebate+(us)$300 internet discount. So, my final price is $1550 off from the sale price(invoice) and more than $3000 off from the MSRP. The only thing I pay more than the US customers is the $28 temporary plate.

我比较过SIENNA CE, 两边的配置差不多. 我的SIENNA CE和加拿大的同样MODEL比, 只相差DAY RUNING LIGHTS (DRL) 和 ENGINE IMOBILIZER. 但我的车配置了Towing (3500lb) Prep Package (includes:Heavy Duty Radiator & Fan, 150 Amp Alt & Power Steering Oil Cooler). 在加拿大要配置这个要~$1000. DRL 可以自己ACTIVATE. 比较两边的配置时, 要看具体的车. 例如, 在TOYOTA.COM LISTED SPEC&FEATURES 上, 美国的SIENNA CE 没有CRUISE CONTROL, ROOF RACK, TOWING PRE PACKAGE. 但我的车都配置了这些.

Try Meloche Monnex at 1-800-268-8955. I only have to pay ~$350 per year more by adding my new US Toyota-SIENNA CE van to my old policy. But, you have to provide "Bill of Sales" and "Car History" (can obtain from CarFax or CarProof) before you can have your us vehicle insured.

I don't have actual experiece in importing a pre-registered vehicles from us. I think you should consul people who have the experiece for more accurate inf. As I know, the title transfer is done in the US MTO office when you ask them to issue you an official copy of "the tiltle". I don't think there are any impacts and tax liability on your friend/relative. I heard some people imported pre-registred cars from US and but I did not hear them telling these issues.

If I can not find the Toyota dealer, then I am considering other dealer to save the trouble.

3. 新车没有在美国注过册, 一定要出关时向US CUSTOM申报吗? 还是CANADA CUSTOM 需要US CUSTOM 的印章? 我的一个朋友, 几年前从美国移居CANADA. 据他回忆, 他只去了CANADA CUSTOM 申报他的在美国注册的车. 我们买其他商品, 也只是向CANADA CUSTOM 报关, 而不需要向US CUSTOM 报关的.

4. 关于临时保险, 是在CANADA 的保险公司申请, 还是在US 的保险公司申请?

CANADIAN TOYOTA DEALER 太黑了. 美元的贬值, 使他们从美国进口汽车的成本大大降低, 可他们一直垄断着价格, 不肯降. 2008 的SIENNA 比2007的还要贵$500 多. 最近, CANADIAN TOYOTA DEALER的负责人还说: 我们的价格是合理的, 是有竞争力. 其背后, 却乞求美国老大哥的保护. 这种行业内部的保护是与北美贸易协定相饽的.

1. Only Pre-registered vehicles have a "TITLE". When a vehicle is registerd for the first time, its original "Manufacturer's Certificate(or Statement) of Origin" (MCO or MSO) will be confiscated and it (the vehicle) will only have a "TITLE" and no MCO any more from now on. Only new (never registered) vehicles have a MCO (or MSO). Some manufacturers call MCO while others may call MSO. MCO and MSO are the same thing. TOYOTA call it MCO. It took me about 2 weeks to obtain the MCO because my van was transfered from another dealership.

2. For TOYOTA vehicles, Recall Clearance Letter can be obtained from TOYOTA manufacturer at 1-800-331-4331. I think it is similar for other manufacturers.

3. If you don't claim your vehicle for exportation at the US border, the vehicle is not legally exported. You may have troubles when you drive it back to US some time later. The Canadian Border Officers usually don't care if you have claimed it for exportation at The US Border and will let you import the vehicle as long as it meets with Canadian importation requirements. So, my advise is that please claim your vehicle for exportation at the US Border. It does not cost you anything and it is a very easy process!

4. Call your current insurance company to add your will-be-imported US vehicle to your current policy. But do this at the last stage when you are for sure you will buy the car. Otherwise, you may have a penalty to cancell the insurance. My insurance company did not give me a temporary insurance. So, I had to take a risk for a penalty if I could not import my van for some reasons. I don't think any US companies will offer a temporary insurance with an aceptatble premium.
