A 26-year-year-old Ottawa man is the city's third homicide victim of 2009 after being shot, along with another man, in the ByWard Market early Thursday morning.
Mohamed Jama Ali died in hospital after police responded to a 911 call at 1:13 a.m. at a three-bar complex containing Collection, Bar 56, and Mercury Lounge. They found Ali and the other man with gunshot wounds to the stomach and left arm, respectively.
There are unconfirmed reports that the second victim, 39, may have been working when he was struck by the gunfire. He has non-life threatening injuries.
"They just shut down the bar early and let people go out the back entrance, said witness Sean Merrikin.
No arrests have been made.
ByWard Market Square between York and George streets remains closed, along with several businesses and market stalls, as police search for evidence. City crews removed a nearby manhole cover and dropped a magnet attached to a rope in hopes of finding shell casings or a weapon.
Anyone with information is asked to call (613) 236-1222 ext.5493 or Crime Stoppers at (613) 233-8477.
The murder occurred less than 48 hours after Dominic Doyon, 33, was found beaten to death in his Murray Street apartment early Tuesday morning. Two men have been charged with second-degree murder.
With a report from CTV Ottawa's Catherine Lathem

The dead was a gang member himself, I heard.
