PEMBROKE — Still without a lawyer, triple-murder accused Basil Borutski appeared in Pembroke court Monday and was remanded until Dec. 7.

Borutski appeared briefly via video link from the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre. He wore an orange jumpsuit and stared intently at the camera for the most part, responding with “No” when instructed to pick up the phone to speak with duty counsel Biagio Del Greco before then agreeing to speak privately with Del Greco.

The 57-year-old was arrested near Ottawa on Sept. 23 after a five-hour manhunt that followed the discovery of the bodies of Anastasia Kuzyk, 36, Nathalie Warmerdam, 48, and Carol Culleton, 66, in their Ottawa Valley homes.

Del Greco said the court may eventually need to find a lawyer for Borutski if he does not find one himself.

“All parties are interested in seeing things move along, so the court could intervene to assist,” said the duty counsel.

Outside the Pembroke courthouse, five women gathered to provide messages of solidarity and support to female victims of violence and the families of the three slain women.

“We are here for the families that had Anastasia, Nathalie and Carol taken from them,” said JoAnne Brooks, director for the Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County.

The women plan to attend the courthouse each time Borutski appears, Brooks said.
