Capital region jobless rate slips to 6.5 per cent in August, despite loss of jobs

The jobless rate in the capital region dropped to 6.5 per cent in August, from 6.6 per cent in July despite loss of 2,000 jobs.

The labour force fell faster in the month, off by 3,400.

High-tech was a bright spot in capital region, with employment up 3,000 in August over July, standing at about 50,700.

It was the sector’s fifth straight monthly gain.

Public administration jobs were also up, rising by 1,300 in August to reach 144,700, or about 20 per cent of all employment.

Retail jobs were down 1,700 to 90,900, while construction employment remained steady.

Drilling into public admin data, federal government jobs were 128,700 in August, 18 per cent of total employment, versus 127,500 in July.

The tally a year ago was 127,000.

Nationally, the country added 26,200 jobs in August, exceeding analysts’ expectations, but the unemployment rate rose to seven per cent.
