The mortgage she shared with her husband Derrick was gone from the home screen of her Canadian bank account. After making a few calls, she found out her mortgage was closed.

Stephanie and Derrick moved abroad for work about four years ago and had their fully furnished house in Etobicoke rented out as income property abroad, they told CBC Toronto. The couple wanted to move back in when they eventually returned to Toronto.
But after he found out about the mortgage, things only got worse. The couple’s property management company swung by their home, only to get a stranger at the door claiming to own the home.
