I6 is just simply too big and heavy. Most likely, only rear wheel drive car can equip with a I6. For most people, these type of configuration means more money. More services are required. If you are considering performance, you will still not be looking at a I6. You will be looking for V12 since I 12 is most likely impossible in a car. To summon my opinion, I6 is most likely to be used in "high end civilian type of sport car".
I dont want to talk about audi ,
BTW, about BMW inline 6, in terms of efficiency, go and check out their Mercedes V6 counter parts to see which ones are clearly more efficient, not to mention performance...........
Very nice theory. However, I believe stability is not I6's issue and usually not any modern engine's - I6 or V6, issue. As far as designing concept, a balance shaft can make the V6 completed balanced.
Usually, the straight-six design is used for engine displacements ranging from approximately 2 to 5 litres (120 to 310 cu in)[2] in automobiles. It is also sometimes used for smaller engines but these, although very smooth running, tend to be rather expensive to manufacture. Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-six_engine.
Although the use of offset crankpins, counterweights, and flying arms has reduced the problem to a minor second-order vibration in modern designs, all V6s can benefit from the addition of auxiliary balance shafts to make them completely smooth. Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-six_engine.
BTW, for the size of a I6, A V8 can be put instead......the I6 that BMW had for year, which they can't reduce it's size nor can they increase more power to it with NA, and that's why Bimmer has used V8 for their M3

Counter part here means the one should be used to compare, same class, same segment etc. Actually they are both doing good in efficiency when you compare their vehicles to their same class competitors, as we don't compare S600 to Yaris.I am not sure what you mean by counter part. However, efficiency is not BMW nor Mercedes 's thing, and it's definitely not I6's thing regardless HP/liter, MPG, etc
