A duck hunter cheated death as the sun set on White Lake on Saturday when the shotgun in his canoe accidentally fired, hitting him in the shoulder.
The 23-year-old White Lake man is an experienced hunter whose shotgun went off as he was hauling a canoe to shore to join three friends in a duck blind.
When his friends heard the gunshot, one of them paddled his wounded friend to a motorboat and ferried him to shore, calling 911 along the way.
The man suffered a shot to a shoulder and underwent successful surgery Saturday night at the Civic campus of The Ottawa Hospital, according to a witness at the scene.
He never lost consciousness and expects to be back to work in a week or two.
The hunting crew says the old, faulty shotgun will be destroyed.
The Ontario Provincial Police have not yet commented on this story.
